1. Champions of the Eart

History
Champions of the Earth is an international environment award established in 2004 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Through four award cycles, it has recognized 28 outstanding environmental leaders.
The Prize Winners
A renaissance in environmental policy does not come in a vacuum. It emerges as a result of collective efforts of governments, civil society organizations and private business. It needs the long-term commitment and vision of men and women. It needs people who are and continue to be Champions of the Earth.
For the 2009 edition, the award has been revamped to distinguish individuals and organizations who have exemplified inspiration, leadership, action and innovation for the environment.

2. UNEP Sasakawa Prize (UNEP)
 
History
The UNEP Sasakawa Prize was established in 1982 by former chairman of the Nippon Foundation, Ryoichi Sasakawa. The Nippon Foundation is an independent, non-profit grant-making organization that supports both domestic and international philanthropic projects. On World Environment Day 2005, UNEP and The Nippon Foundation launched the new UNEP Sasakawa Prize to nurture environmental innovation, research, initiatives and ideas on an annually changing theme.

The UNEP Sasakawa Prize is awarded every year to individuals with an established track record of achievement and the potential to make outstanding contributions to the protection and management of the environment consistent with UNEP’s policies and objectives.
The publicity and prestige associated with winning the UNEP Sasakawa Prize is just one of its advantages. Recognizing that good ideas deserve a helping hand, the $200,000 UNEP Sasakawa Prize offers the financial support laureates need to build on their achievements.

3. Goldman Environmental Prize

The Goldman Environmental Prize is the world's largest prize honoring grassroots environmentalists.
History
Founded in 1990 by Richard and Rhoda Goldman, the Goldman Environmental Prize annually awards US$150,000 to environmental heroes from each of the world's six inhabited continental regions. Each spring the Goldman Environmental Foundation receives nominations from a pre-selected group of environmental experts from around the world.
The Prize Winners
The work of Goldman Prize winners often focuses on protecting endangered ecosystems and species, combating destructive development projects, promoting sustainability, influencing environmental policies and striving for environmental justice.
The Annual Prize Announcement and Events
Announced every April to coincide with Earth Day, the Goldman Environmental Prize winners are selected by an international jury from confidential nominations submitted by a worldwide group of environmental organizations and individuals. Prize winners participate in a 10-day tour of San Francisco and Washington D.C.—highlighted by award ceremonies in San Francisco and Washington D.C.—including news conferences, media briefings and meetings with political and environmental leaders.

4. Volvo Environment Prize

History
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded by an independent foundation, which was instituted in 1988. Laureates represent all fields of environmental and sustainability studies and initiatives.
The Volvo Environment Prize consists of a diploma, a glass sculpture and a cash award for SEK 1.5 million (approximately EUR 160 000 or USD 215 000)
The Prize Winners
The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation invites universities, research institutes, scientists and engineers as well as other individual and organisations to submit nominations for the Volvo Environment Prize.
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for "Outstanding innovations or scientific discoveries which in broad terms fall within the environmental field". Priority is given to an individual or to a group of named individuals, rather than to institutions.
The Biennial Prize Announcement and Events
Nominations for 2010 will open in August 2009. The Prize ceremony takes place in Stockholm in November 2009.

5. Zayed Future Energy Prize

History
The Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP) is the preeminent award in field of clean energy supported by the Government of Abu Dhabi and announced at the World Future Energy Summit in 2008. It recognizes and aspires individuals, organizations and companies--making contributions in clean energy research, engineering, theoretical advancement, and/or in the areas public policy and public awareness. The Zayed Future Energy Prize is one way in which Abu Dhabi has chosen to honour and continue HH Sheikh Zayed's legacy of environmental stewardship.
The Prize Winners
Projects and innovations in one or more of the following fields are eligible for nomination:
- Renewable and sustainable energy
- Efficient use of traditional sources of energy
- Conservation
- Sustainable energy policy
- Communication and public awareness.
The selection process for the Prize is modeled on the Nobel Prize. The finalists will be selected by global experts in clean energy. The winner will be awarded a prize of $1.5 million and the two finalists will be awarded a $350,000 each.

Nominations and Submissions for the Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP) will be open until July 31, 2008 and September 30, 2008, respectively. The winner and finalists of the first Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP) will be announced at the World Future Energy Summit on January, 19th 2009.

History
The Nature and Environment Prize was instituted in 1988. The Nature and Environment Prize is one of four Nordic Council prizes. The three others are for literature, film and music.
The Prize Winners
The purpose of the Nature and Environment Prize is to increase awareness of nature and environmental work in the Nordic countries. The prize is awarded annually.
The prize is awarded to a Nordic enterprise, organisation or individual, which has managed in an exemplary way to integrate consideration for nature and the environment into their business or work, or which, in some other way, has made an extraordinary effort for nature and the environment. The prize is worth DKK 350,000 and is given to a private or public enterprise, organization, or person that has taken special initiatives to protect nature and the environment.

7. AUSTRALIA: Banksia Environmental national Awards

History
The Banksia Environmental national Awards are regarded as the most prestigious environmental awards in Australia. The Banksia Environmental Foundation also organises the Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year Award and is in partnership with other Environmental and Sustainability Awards. The Banksia Environmental Foundation was founded in 1989 by a diverse group of 44 Australians who shared a common goal to do more to support and recognise members of the community for their positive contribution to the environment.

8. CANADA : Canadian Environment Awards

History
Since 2002, the Canadian Environment Awards has recognized more than 140 Canadian individuals and groups that are working on community, regional and national levels in the name of the environment. Continuing their hard work, these Gold and Silver Award winners have invested $330,000 in prize money into environmental projects across the country. Since 2002, more than 500 community-based projects and programs have been nominated for recognition, and 115 have advanced as finalists.

The Canadian Environment Awards: A Celebration of Community Achievement is a national, bilingual program that recognizes individuals and groups of Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to the protection, restoration and preservation of the Canadian environment.
The Community Awards, which honours environmental action at the local level, is the flagship program of the Canadian Environment Awards.

10. CHINA : China Environment Prize

History
The China Environment Prize was established in 2000 by the China Environmental Protection Foundation to honor and encourage individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the cause of environmental protection in China. The foundation was the first nonprofit organization in China dedicated to environmental protection.
The Prize Winners
According to the regulation of "Rewarding Method for China Environment Prize", the candidates for China Environment Prize shall not be circumscribed by nationality, region, race or religious belief, etc. Any individual or organization can participate in the appraisal through combination of recommendation of the society and the self-recommendation of the individual or organization. The China Environment Prize will be appraised every year.

11. JAPAN: ECO JAPAN CUP 2008

History
“Eco Japan Cup" is a public-private partnership event organized jointly by the Environmental Business Women, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The goal is to create a sound, rich, and beautiful “Eco Japan” that balances economy with the environment. Through this contest, we can link different economic stakeholders with environmental goals and together bring forth new economic values.

"Eco Japan Cup" has three categories related to economy: Business, Citizens (Lifestyle) and Culture. Each category will hold contests with ECO as their central theme. There will also be a Special Category holding a special theme set for the year

GOVERNOR’S ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARDS
History
The Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards are the most prestigious environmental and conservation awards in the state. For over 20 years, the awards have been presented to individuals and organizations that make great contributions to the conservation of our wildlife and related natural resources, the natural elements upon which all life depends.
The Prize Winners
The purpose of the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards is to recognize outstanding achievements by individuals, businesses, organizations, educational institutions, and agencies for successful environmental projects and conservation measures. Also to promote leadership by example and in turn increase conservation of the natural resources of the State of Tennessee – its wildlife, forests, soils, water, natural heritage, parks and recreation, and air. The awards are designed to bring about a greater knowledge and awareness of environmental and conservation practices and projects, and to give proper recognition to those persons and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the natural resource welfare of their community and the state.

14. BELGIUM : Belgian Energy & Environment Awards

History
Since 2006, the “Belgian Energy & Environment Awards” has paid tribute to more than 450 Belgians who have contributed in an exceptional manner, individually or through their organisations, to the construction of a sustainable future on a local, regional and national level. This prize applies to the whole of Belgium.
The Prize Winners
These prizes highlight a whole range of initiatives concerning the environment, energy and climate change. The candidates for these excellence awards are citizens, companies, associations, schools, administrations, research centres and communes among many others.
All of them have this in common: their commitment to sustainable development.
The Annual Prize Announcement and Events
Registrations for participation are open as from Monday 27 October 2008.
The prizes will be awarded during a prestigious ceremony presented by the Prime Minister, the Federal Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy and the Climate, and in the presence of the regional ministers in charge of energy or the environment.
Set to take place on Friday 5 June 2009, this date coincides with the celebration of World Environment Day organised by the United Nations. Subsequently, it will assign one of its representatives to assess and encourage these Belgians who contribute to the construction of our shared future.
